Something tells me that even if we did decide to downgrade to 1.7, people would still complain. They'd just direct their complaints to the problems that plagued 1.7 in particular, such as the lack of development, plethora of hacking clients available, and unfairness between how 1.7 players and 1.8 players interact in-game. I'd like to remind people that 1.7 was far from perfect, and there are solid benefits to 1.8 that encouraged us to adopt it whole-heartedly.
But ultimately, our entire system is more or less built with 1.8 in mind, and that was one of the major reasons we were able to push out such major updates like the LBU and MCG V2; without having to worry about dual protocols (i.e. coding for 1.7 and 1.8), we are better able to churn our code at a much quicker pace, on top of it being overall more stable.
In order to revert to 1.7, we'd basically need to gut our entire system again. That's several months worth of work and a lot of money being sunk into something that we do not see the merits of; just because people say they left until 1.7 comes back doesn't mean they'll actually come back once 1.7 returns. Reverting back to 1.7 just isn't a practical move, no matter how many of times these sorts of threads get remade.
Honestly, if you really hate 1.8, don't demand to bring back 1.7. Wait to see 1.9.
Because we're an early adopter of 1.8, our roll-out of 1.9 will be much easier than other networks who are lagging behind. And we hope that the 1.9 combat update will address everyone's anti-1.8 PvP concerns.
