Can someone PM me on how exactly will we change our names? Like, will you have to migrate your Mojang account or something?

We can't. You have to wait till 1.8 comes out in May.

I think the first time you change your name it should be free. Then maybe you have to pay $5 or $10 for each additional time you change it. If you're able to change your name constantly I think it would ruin MCSG or minecraft multiplayer in general... But then again on steam you can change your name constantly... but then again there is a friend system on steam *cough cough* *hint hint* *clears throat* (please add a friend system ).

As far as actually doing it goes, it's probably going to be as quick and easy as typing in the new name and hitting a change button, just like changing your password. Name will only be a superficial change, like your skin.

Assuming accounts can't share a name, you'd just need to change your alt's name then change ShootToMaim to ShootToKill.

Name changing will always be free but they may limit it in case it gets out of hand. Also Mojang has confirmed they are adding a friend system.

Hello tributes!

As you may realize, Minecraft 1.7.7 is now out; Mojang has done some changes in this version to prepare for name changing in 1.8 (you can not change names yet). As you may know if you were playing on our servers last night, we've already updated to support 1.7.7. We currently support all released 1.7 versions on our servers: 1.7.2, 1.7.4, 1.7.5, 1.7.6, and 1.7.7.

EDIT: 1.7.7 came out shortly after 1.7.6 to fix some crash issues; our servers now support 1.7.7 as well.

Here's the answers to a few frequently asked questions on name changing:
Q. Will I lose my rank if I change my name?
A. No, your rank is tied to your UUID (unique/universal user identifier). Your UUID is a string of numbers and letters that are assigned to your Mojang account, and do not change even when you change your name.

Q. Will I lose my stats if I change my name?
A. No; same reasoning as above. Your stats are tied to your UUID.

Q. When will name changing be supported?
A. According to Mojang, you'll be able to change your name sometime after 1.8's release, after they have completed an update to their web services.

Q. I'm banned and I'm changing my name. Will this unban me?
A. No. Just like your ranks and stats, bans are also tied to your UUID.

Q. When will 1.8 come out?
A. As far as I'm aware, the last Mojang estimation was for a release sometime in May.

Can we erase our stats and start again? I was pretty nuuby and would like to if I could. Is there a way to?
