I think this sounds awesome, but is just a little unrealistic. As big as the mcsg community is, I don't think this would draw enough people to make it viable. Besides, what would you do for two or three days at a mcsg convention? I get that you could meet staff and maybe even Chad, but other than that what is there to do; play mcsg? As much as this sounds cool, I don't think it is really realistic. I think something that makes a LOT more sense is having a big booth at minecon or pax prime. There you could still meet people from mcsg, but once you're done with that you still have practically a million other things you can do. A mcsg convention would be really cool, but I honestly don't see it happening anytime soon.
The staff could try out new ideas that they have, as well as getting ideas from the community. We could play other Minecraft game-types, laugh at the hive, etc.
Old versions of MCSG could be played e.g. V1

I'm down for a convention, but I honestly don't think that our community is large enough or has the resources per-capita to hold even a modestly-sized convention venue. Conventions anticipate thousands of people, and I realistically think that a meet-up for MCG alone would bring in under 100. Many of us just don't have the means or the willingness to drop everything and travel across the country/world for a community event, much like MineCon.

What we COULD do, however, is do a series of smaller meet-ups within local areas (e.g. NorCal MCSGers, Greater London MCSGers, Sydney MCSGers). Local players meet up with other players within their region and just hang out. Maybe dig some cakes out of some chests and have a picnic before attacking each other with wooden sticks and fishing rods. Members of staff would be guests of honor, and maybe Chad and I could join at some of the more conveniently timed/located meets. It'd be a more practical solution for our circumstances.

Some small meetups would be cool. I just wonder how many players from various regions would even know that meetings were taking place, and be able to go.
Perhaps some people with larger properties could host get-togethers, or at a park somewhere.

@HalfSquirrel remember dis, yes? I vote Toronto, or Minnesota! (teehee)

To be completely honest, an MCSG convention would be doable, but would likely be... small. With all of the available players and the spread out regions, there would be a lot of trouble with gathering enough people. It wouldn't necessarily need to be at a huge, well known, or expensive venue. Actually, a local Lion's club (pretty much a public park that is easily rentable) would be enough to host such a minute audience. The only problem the raising of interest and the raising of numbers. We'd need somewhere general, yet somewhat interesting, to reduce ticket costs and be able to still attract families.

Also, an entry fee, if existing, would need to be small-ish. We wouldn't want to turn away the already minimal number of possible attendees.

You'd need to also consider that most of the players won't come, but some of the silent ones would possibly show up. It could account for a larger audience than anticipated. We'd need organization.

So pretty much:
1. Cheap
2. Accessible
3. Organized
4. Advertised

Yes please. I'd love to meet some Canadians and Northern Central Americans :D
Oh, god, this'd be amazing if it were to happen. Would MCSG organize them, or would public parties.

Another idea related to Col_staR's is... a tour bus. Round up the popular crew, travel around in a tour bus to different regions and have organized meet-ups. It'd be very nice, efficient, kind of cheap (well, cheaper), and satisfying to everyone's needs.

For Canadians, me and @VeeZa were going to go to wonderland at the same time, but it didn't end up happening :p That could be one of those smaller venues if it were to happen, because it's still fun for most people :) Although it would be expensive to do if the whole place was rented :p

I think a good time to do an MCSG convention for everyone around the world would either be within the same week as Minecon, just after or before, or at roughly the opposite time of year as Minecon so people aren't just barely missing it.

Anyways, I would probably only be able to come if it was near me (as in within like an hour at most :p) so it doesn't really affect me.
