Hey hey

Time to revisit everyone's favorite subject again: Enchanting!

I don't want to go too deep into theorycrafting, so I'll simply explain what's going on in the screenshot. As you can see, enchanting items will now come with a resource cost in addition to enchantment levels. We're currently using gold ingots for this. Also, enchanting now separates requirements from costs, according to these rules:

  • The level requirement is calculated the same way as before. Max level is still 30

  • The cost is based on which enchantment power you choose (1 to 3)

  • One (randomly chosen) enchantment will be displayed in the tooltip

  • The random seed for enchantments is not reset until you enchant an item
Gaining enchantment levels have been made more expensive again, but you will not pay more than 3 levels when enchanting an item. Obviously repair costs in the anvil have been rebalanced to fit (notably renaming items only costs 1 level).

As always, work in progress. We'll begin snapshotting Minecraft 1.8 in January.
This means that enchanting is going to be less random, but more expensive. How do you guys think this will affect MCSG? Minecraft?

People hardly enchant as it is (On MCSG). But, it will be a huge thing in survival.

That's ridiculously stupid, it takes all the fun out of enchanting because there's no mystery about what you'll get.

I thought there was some plugin that made MCSG enchants to always be either knockback or sharpness for swords, protection and projectile protection for armor, and power for bow. Idk, i just remember hearing this somewhere.

I don't think this is true; sharpness just seems to be the most common enchant with lower levels. Ive gotten enchantments such as Blast Protection and Bane of Anthropods before.

This ruins my plan on another server, but other than that, I'm OK with this.

This doesn't affect MCSG, really. Maybe when the survival server comes out it will.

I have a bittersweet feeling about this new enchanting system.

on one hand:
-no more wasting levels on bad enchantments...
-a good use for gold
-equip yourself the way you want to and not through luck
-easier to get enchanted

while on the other hand:
-only gives you three options for enchanting (it doesn't reset until you've enchanted the item out of the three)
-no more luck of the draw or lottery
-enchantments everywhere

The use of gold as enchanting 'fuel' will definitely bring change to enchanting as we know it on MCSG. Those gold ingots in your inventory that you can hardly use for golden apples will now be able to enchant your diamond sword easily. Even one ingot would be enough for at least Sharpness I, a crushing blow for already stacked players.

Alternatively, a wooden sword with Knockback could be very useful to a weak player, if they could enchant. It'll totally be a game changing update, if enchanting like this is allowed. Unless I'm misinterpreting this and you need 2 levels AND 2 gold ingots to be able to enchant. Then not much would change and you'd need to still fish.

Mixed feelings, really.

Yes, if that was the case then this would be game changing. Unfortunately, it is as you feared. You need the levels AND the ingots. So it's pretty much pointless and would just make enchanting that much more difficult in a SG server.

Although it may cost more to enchant items, I think this will be very useful. Many people might not like it at first as that's how it is with any change with an existing feature in a game. However, we finally won't have to waste our diamonds on enchanting until we get that Looting III sword or a Fortune III pick. I play survival quite often, and there was a time I spent 14 diamonds on diamond swords as well as 210 levels to finally receive a Looting III sword. I don't care much for the randomness of enchantments because it mostly ends up wasting my time when I need a specific enchantment. I think, at first, many players will be hesitant toward this new feature, but after a while, I believe it will be an accepted improvement.
