You really can't assume that everyone who posts these threads are overreacting...

Of course, I notice that you used words like "not all people" and "most people". But still, you never know exactly how these people are feeling, you can't assume that they're just seeking attention. Lots of these people are actually doing the opposite, they are releasing something they've kept and stored inside without sharing it. They bottle up all their tension...and find a way to liberate it in hopes of finding assistance . When these "depressed people" post these threads, they are (lots of times) seeking help on a troubling problem from the people and the community that they trust and love. It's only natural for a video game nerd who's feeling down to ask more nerds for support.

Sure, lots of these people are overreacting about whatever problem they're going through. Some are doing it solely to have others pity them, others are overreacting without even knowing. Most of these people are teenagers- we teenagers are notorious for overreacting and thinking our lives are over because of simple problems.

But some of us also feel very strongly for "minor problems".

Say I love my teddy bear. I love him SO MUCH, it would be the end of the world if he was gone. I almost love him as much as my own mother.

The next day, my mom burns it with a flamethrower. He's dead. I would be devastated, extremely sad. Depressed, even.

Then, a kid who has never had a teddy bear or known what it feels to love something so much, hears about my problem. He instantly thinks something like "Wow, what an idiot! He's overreacting over a simple teddy bear. Hahahaha, this kid has no idea what it means to be sad/depressed".

^That kid right there has no idea what he's talking about. How in the hell does he know what I'm going through? That teddy bear was my whole world! I know I feel bad, and I can't shake it off. It makes me sad inside...and it hasn't stopped. Time has passed....and I can't stop thinking of my little teddy bear. I am DEPRESSED.

(Of course I'm kidding on the entire situation about the teddy bear....I'm trying to give a serious and rather controversial topic a happy/comedic side to it)

Basically, don't go around claiming that people are overreacting when you don't know all the facts. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW A PERSON CAN FEEL ABOUT SOMETHING!! Nobody has the right to say that someone is overreacting without going through a similar experience or understanding what they are going through!

Meh, that's my take on the problem. I'll probs edit this out a bit later. Peace.

As much as these threads may bug you, what is more important, whether you are annoyed or not, or whether someone lives or not? Many people on these forums have close to no real life friends. If they want to talk to somebody, there is a good chance it will be here. You laugh at that, but like Bamber stated in that amazing post above, little things can matter a lot to certain people. In 1929 on Black Tuesday, the day the stock market crashed and began the great depression, eleven investors committed suicide by the end of the day. Are we really that different? Can we not all get set off into depression by insignificant things?

It is probably not healthy to be resorting to a place like this to talk out your depression. Parents and counselors are much better. However, does it really matter? If you are completely done with life, does it matter who makes you go a little further and stay on the path of existence?

I personally have only seen three of these threads you speak of. They are not being made every day. And when I have seen them made, various members from all over the community offered support and kind words, probably making someone's day entirely, or giving them a better outlook on life. They have given me tears and a better outlook on life, while I haven't even been depressed. Indeed a gaming forum is not a healthy place to seek help, but it works for some people. You don't have to click on them if you don't want to. If you don't like what you are reading, there is a button known as "back button" located on the upper left corner of your screen.

Should it be that you prevented someone from venting their feelings by making this thread, I promise you would feel like crap. What if someone has no outlets whatsoever and spirals downward into deep and hopeless depression all because of something like this? Then they fake their death and point out you specifically as being a jerk? How would you feel? Be nice to depressed people. It doesn't matter how annoying they are. They need love, not exclusion and hate.

Both of these were very valid points and I literally enjoyed reading over them. I know now the reasons why people make these threads (Believe me that when I created this thread I figured that the only reason people did these was to get attention. If this was the actual case I'm sure you could see why I was disapproving of these threads).

BitoBain, the snip right here was pretty spectacular, kudos to you:
As much as these threads may bug you, what is more important, whether you are annoyed or not, or whether someone lives or not?
The one thing I just can't figure out is this: when people post these threads the whole community is seeing it. Odds are that the people making these threads might have a couple close online buddies, why not just message it to them? I'm not trying to be rude but why do they have to publicly vent? This is the reason I tend to think they're seeking attention. There's no way that they're "friends" with every single person who posts on those threads, they can get as many as 40 or some posts.

I might be wrong here, but are messages from strangers over the internet that you barely know really all that helpful? If they truly are helpful to people, so be it and I'll probably end the discussion here because there would be nothing further to discuss. But I really just can't see that in any way. I need someone to explain to me why a internet stranger saying "you're cool" can honestly pull someone "out of depression".

Being someone who has been diagnosed with depression I can tell you that some random stranger saying "How are you" can make you feel better.

Nobody is being forced to tell them how awesome they are
Imagine the community's backlash on the one guy that was brave enough to say something not completely positive about the person.

MCSG Forums should not be used for random threads about self-hate or getting abused or anything. There are forums for that, and there are people who spent four years+ in a university just to help people. But no, take it to MCSG, a forum full of kids and teens that MIGHT say something bad to you.

I don't take any threads about suicide/depression/abuse seriously on this forum. Why would I? This is the worst place to post about that type of stuff.

Did someone lose their teddy bear?
I DID. HIS NAME WAS ROGER. HE WAS A DOG. ;_______________; I WAS ASLEEP AND HE FELL OUT OF THE CAR DOOR AT A GAS STATION WHEN MY MOM OPENED MY DOOR FOR SOME REASON.
DON'T #^@# AROUND WITH THEM TEDDY BEAR SOB STORIES M8

(I actually did lose my second favorite stuffed animal, Roger. He was indeed a Stuffed Dog. I also have several stories about nearly using the only stuffed animal I still sleep with after losing Roger, Sheepy. As you may guess, he is a sheep. And he's like 9 years old, and can make sushi, and fly, and.... he has... interesting "super powers"... XD dont ask.)

Alrighty, well Bamber rrr rrrr rrrrrr wanted a moo-post here so whoopdee-doo! (Or however you spell it.)

So I'm going to draw upon some sources and previous examples, and this post will be, as usual, based around my opinion. Please try your best not to take offense, and if something can be interpreted two ways, pick the way that is least offensive. (I might link some websites. If I do, you'll probably see the hyperlink thingies.)

First, what is depression?
An intense feeling of sadness, which can affect you in your every-day life. "...including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless
(http://gyazo.com/5357b8ae619d16af23d442b62c68b839, taken from the same website as the quote above.)

Taken from Google:

Taken from https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression/index.shtml:

So, (in your mind) raise your hand and say "I" if you think you may have experienced 3 or more of these (from the first screenshot) at once. You might have a minor case of depression. It's not as bad, but still horrible. According to the DSM-IV thingy, if you have 5+, you depressssedddd sonnnn. (bad joke? bad joke.)

Okay, now that we have that out of the way, let's move onnnn >>>>>
Oh wait, something to say before we go on.
So before anyone goes off on me and says, "bro, you ain't got no idea what depression is like mayne!" I just want to say - Uh, yeah. I do. I had it for at least four months in early 2013 and it may have started before that, in mid to late 2012, when I was having a lot of family conflicts, and I "may or may not have" *cough cough* attempted suicide four times. (I think it's a crime so I'm not supposed to say that I have, if I have. I will deny this in court as long as I am not under oath, and even if I am you won't be able to tell if I'm telling the truth or not. Just.. leave it.) I've dealt with it, and moved on. I still do suffer from some symptoms of depression, and occasionally have thoughts about self-harming, which I do my best to disregard and ignore.
I also have experience with people who are bipolar - my father, for instance, was a perfect example of a clinically bipolar human being.

Okay now I can continue.

The original topic of this thread! I can't forget to talk about that!!
So, CrystalKnowledge stated that he personally dislikes depression and suicide threads, and several people have agreed with him.
His reasoning? Summed, up:
  • He thinks that some of those people may be doing it for attention. (Not everyone.) They want people to praise them, or give positive comments.
  • He does have a precedent to base off of. Ender_Harold. In the past, Ender_Harold created a thread, claiming to be his brother, and stating that Ender_Harold (Real name, Cole) had passed away. I don't remember the specifics, and Subv3rsion himself has supposedly erased evidence of whatever Ender_Harold did, so I can't find the thread. Ender_Harold is also forum-banned (yet has sadly made alt accounts..)
  • This is the wrong website to do it on. We all know this is not a website for depression thoughts. It's a video game forum, not a depression help hotline or website.
Now, I have to agree that some people - hopefully just a very, very small portion - are doing it for attention. We don't really have any solid proof of people doing it, though - it's mostly intuition based off of their actions and words. Announces depression>Receives compliments>Says they're getting better>Perhaps insert another depressive spiral here>Boom, back in business, everything's fine.
I can't say that that's actually what happens, but I've seen stuff like that occur. I do know for a FACT that people on MCGamer DO have depression, even a Senior Mod who happens to really love cute Pokemon. When I was first starting to competitively play MCSG, I was depressed, and used MCSG as my escape from it all. It actually worked for me.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 3.3% of teens from the ages of 13-18 experience a "seriously debilitating depressive disorder."

Those 3.3%. The facts may not tell you this, but something that I find to be true, is:
More teens who are lower on the "social ladder" in schools and other groups experience depression than the teens who are higher on the "social ladder".
For example - Nerds and geeks (yes, there's a difference) IF they experience depression, it is often caused by bullying from others or thoughts of self-worthlessness, which can sometimes be caused simply by their outward appearance.
Obese teens may have thoughts, similarly to the above mentioned, of self-worthlessness caused by their weight or bullying which occurred because of that weight. After all, we all know how evil some people can be. I've first-hand experienced all three aspects of the bullying circle - the bully, the bullied, and the bystander.

Okay can I stop typing now? I'm getting cramps because I haven't eaten yet and I've been typing for like the past half an hour. I've only been awake for 45 minutes. ;_; Bamber am I done yet?

EDIT FROM LIKE 24 MINUTES AFTER POSTING THIS: I HONESTLY GOT NOTHING WHATSOEVER DONE IN THIS THREAD. LIKE YEAH, IT WAS INFORMATIVE, BUT IT HONESTLY SERVED NO PURPOSE OTHER THAN TO STAND HERE AND LOOK PRETTY. AND LONG, REALLY LONG.
...thats what she said.... I'm sorry I had to..
SO YEAH.
ACTUALLY, AFTER READING THIS AGAIN IT...
oh wait, i had caps lock on. GG. I'm too lazy to go back and retype that. Continuing..
Actually, after reading through my post again, I suppose it does give some purpose, but it doesn't take a clear stance on this issue. So just to clarify and summarize, I do personally believe that suicide and depression help-threads are OK, but only if the person is actually facing depression/suicidal thoughts, and wants help. Don't post it just to rant. (Even though I do post rant threads sometimes, which I really shouldn't.) So only post them threads if you want someone's help - don't post it just to express yourself, try to ask for advice on your situation, and actually take that advice and try to apply it in your personal life, and see if it helps. Otherwise, what's the point in talking about it? That's what friends are for, but if you're just taco 'bout it, just stick to Skype and TeamSpeak or something.
Edit from like 38 minutes after posting this: And before y'all go off about how I need God in my life or something, cause all I do is type long posts on a gaming forum and talk about how I was depressed... I just went Bible shopping yesterday, and I'm going to a church camp in August for two weeks in NY.

Mooclan ily for that
