Hey guys,

I have a suggestion of making names invisible!
You might think (WHAT ARE THESE SHENANIGOATS) but it will make everything more realistic and harder. You can't see peoples names. No more need for holding shift for people not to see the names. And other stuff. So what do you guys think

I'm on board with it. I think the added realism would improve gameplay (though it would extend the length of games) - only problem I see is that it would be extremely easy for people to circumvent the server plugin.

Of course they could. It's all about packets, my friend. Stop the invisible names packet coming to you and you're on vanilla name vision again.

Well, if everyone doesn't have a name, and they turn it on for themselves, wouldn't that be pointless because everyone can see his name and the others are invisible.

No. Let me explain.

Name visibility is 100% clientside. That means that, like texturepacks and custom guis, it is editable by someone with knowledge of how the programming works.

Things like server plugins and things of that nature communicate those plugins to players over packets. Packets are little bits of data automatically downloaded onto your minecraft for temporary use. This is how the plugin would prevent you from seeing other players names.

Conversely, you can send packets to the server, about your player position and items and things like that. You can use custom client hacks and things of that nature (100% bannable offense) to do things like op yourself, climb walls like a spider, and speedhack (only on lower end servers). These are clientside, because, basically, your minecraft.jar is set up to send fake information to the server.
Wall climbing hacks, for instance, tell the server that you are on a ladder. The server says "Cool, climb on up!"

This is how hacking systems like nodus can be used to see players and chests from far away, or that are on the other sides of walls.

You can;t force people to add a plugin into their client >.> But I am pretty sure there would be something that can be done serverside maybe.
Shows how much I know. Listen to this guy.
