Hello MCGamer Community!

A few days ago, Mojang released an oft-requested feature to Minecraft: the ability for users to change their username. As such, there has been a recent rush of names as players scramble for the assortment of letters that best suits their personality. Unfortunately, some peoples' personalities are inappropriate at best, and as such we've had to change some of our community's policies.

As such, the following rules are in effect (and to be written into the rules shortly):
  • Inappropriate or Trolling Usernames are now Permanently Bannable with one chance for Dispute forgiveness.
  • Impersonation is punishable with a permanent ban under either of two circumstances with one chance for Dispute forgiveness:
    • The impersonator uses the impersonation for their own personal gain.
    • The impersonator uses the impersonation to ruin the reputation of the one they're impersonating.
Usernames may not be in the same vein as chat messages, but they are still messages that can be seen and interpreted in regular communication. This, paired with the recent amount of changes to unacceptable names, requires that the staff step in to curb such malicious activities. So make sure your new name is appropriate, otherwise you might be banned until you can change it to something more acceptable.

Inappropriate or Trolling Usernames

Inappropriate usernames are usernames that have any sort of content that is inappropriate for the age demographics of the network. Terms or phrases used in a gruesome, violent, sexual, or devious manner inside of a username is thus subject to punishment until the name is changed. If it's not PG-13, it shouldn't be used.

Trolling usernames are aimed at particular people or groups of people with the intention of abusing, insulting, or threatening that group. They're often used as a way to get a rise of attention out of someone, or in an attempt to circumvent language filters. If the username was said in standard chat out of context and was still deemed to be abusive, insulting, or threatening, it would be punishable as a username as well.

If the staff interprets your username to be either Inappropriate or Trolling, you will be permanently banned. So generally make sure that your name is acceptable; having a risky name isn't worth the trouble of being banned for a minimum of 30 days.

Impersonation Offenses

In general, impersonation is not an offensive act; after all, doesn't the saying go, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? If someone changes their username to something that looks similar to yours, that is not immediately punishable.

However, when they begin to act in a way that is malicious while using your likeness, that offense is definitely punishable with a permanent ban. As such, the staff will punish players who are found guilty of impersonating for personal gain, or impersonating to ruin one's reputation.

Impersonation for personal gain: using someone else's likeness in order to obtain items or information that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Example:
ChadtehDJ: "I own the servers. You should pay me $10 or else I'll ban you from here."
MCGamerMod: "Let me win this game and I will make you a moderator too."

Impersonation to ruin one's reputation: using someone else's likeness in order to act in an inappropriate manner with the intention of tarnishing the person's reputation; pretending to be another person and behaving poorly.
ChadtehDJ: "I own the servers and I hate them. I only do this for the money!"
MCGamerMod: "All of the staff here are required to salute Hitler, because he was absolutely right!"

Username Offense Dispute Forgiveness

Thanks to the name change feature, we now can do exactly that: change names. So while people might change their account name to something inappropriate, they can also change it back after a one month period of time. As such, we are offering a Username Offense Dispute Forgiveness procedure, a way to dispute your username ban in order to be unbanned.

So if you were permanently banned for any offense that involves your username, all you need to do is change your name to something appropriate and post a Ban Dispute. If the Sr. Staff confirms your name change and approves of your new name, you will be unbanned.

Do note, however, that you will only be forgiven once for your first offense. So if you get banned for an inappropriate username, change it, get unbanned, change it to something inappropriate again, and then get banned again, you will not be forgiven a second time. The Senior Staff also reserves the right to revoke the opportunity for forgiveness for names that are too inappropriate as well.

A Few Notes about Name Changes in General

  • Mojang's instructions on changing your username can be found at this link here: LINK.
  • Mojang offers you one name change every 30 days. Your old name will be reserved for 37 days, allowing you seven days to change back to your old name if you so desire.
  • Premium Ranks, Stats Resets, and MCGamer Credits will all be saved to the account they were purchased for, regardless of any name changes done.
  • Punishment history will also be saved to accounts regardless of any name changes done.
  • Just like with chat offenses, the staff will interpret usernames and decide whether a username is inappropriate or not. Their interpretation of your username is the deciding factor.
Forum Account Name Changes

Many people are leaving posts on profiles and PM's about changing their forum account names to match their new username. Remember that all forum account name change requests must be sent via email to the Support team. Please do not gum up the Administration's profiles or inboxes with name changes requests.

So be sure to email [email protected] with your name change request, and be sure to include your current forum account name and the account name you wish to be changed to.

A Note about Forum Applications

Whether you're applying for Mod or applying for a clan, we realize that the name changes sometimes create an issue with applications that are posted on the forums. If you post an application with your old username and then change your name, the forum application will not automatically update with your new username; it will still show your old username. So if the staff or a clan leader ever needs to search for your punishment history or your ingame statistics, they will type in your old username and get a missing result (or worse, someone else's results).

As such, it is important that you remember to change your username in any forum applications that you may fill out. Xenforo allows you to Edit any post that you make, so please do so right after you change your username. In addition, the staff also reserves the right to deny user applications if they do not change your username in time.

MCGamerMod: "All of the staff here are required to salute Hitler, because he was absolutely right!"
Pretty extreme example.
