FPS randomly locks at under 10; doesn't fix until Minecraft is restarted

Yep, well, even though I'm a staff member, I'm posting here because I haven't had any success whatsoever in searching the problem on the internet. So: sometimes shortly after the start of a game, my screen freezes and my FPS goes to around 5-7 and stays there, and the issue continues occurring until I restart Minecraft or worse, have to restart my entire computer. My graphics card is perfectly fine and my FPS has been great even on good settings, but it's just these random lag spikes that seem to be striking more and more often. It's been ruining many of my games lately.

This had started to happen randomly ever since I installed the latest optifines for 1.7.4. (I always have the latest verstion) Worst thing about it, it's happened every time I've played on SG5. Other maps I've had it occur on more than once are Holiday Resort and SG2; but not ever time. I have never had it start to happen on any other servers; other than in games our MCSG servers. Hasn't happened on Kit PVP or the hub, but if it occurs in a game, the effect carries over to those; and even other servers altogether. Also of possible significance, it has never happened during Pre-game or Deathmatch, only during a Live Game.

Has anyone else had this, or know how to fix it? I don't want to have to remove optifine because with it my FPS is fantastic... except when it decides not to be, which is rare, but still very irritating as you can imagine... :/

Try to use the 1.7.2 version of optifine and see if it also occurs on that

This had happened to me, I found the cause was I was using 32 bit Java when I have a 64 bit OS. I suggests downloading 64 bit Java, this allows you to allocate more RAM to Minecraft (Open Launcher -> Edit Profile -> Tick JVM Arguments -> Work out Half of your RAM and enter -XmxG -> Insert the RAM between x and G. This should help. If you can't find 64 bit Java (it is very hard to find for some reason) I can send it you over Skype - PM if you need to

Hope this works :D

Can I do that? I thought you were stuck with whatever your operating system has, which I think is 32 for me. Plus, I only have Windows XP. Gross, I know, but better than Windows 7 on a laggy laptop.

Edit: On the other hand I actually don't know what I'm supposed to have. Any tips on checking what it should be? :p

Oh, you can't have 64 bit Java on a 32 bit OS. Do Computer -> System Properties to check your OS. If it is 32 then I can't help you, if it is 64 then follow the instructions above. :D

When using 1.7.2 optifine my screen not just loses fps, it restarts my entire computer. 1.7.4 forge is out? I have no idea haven't had that much modding time lately

I got that in another game a few times. I have had Minecraft randomly close in the middle of a game before though, but I think that was in 1.7.2.

Any errors when the game closes? Sounds like you used up all your RAM when minecraft is running

I suggest investing in a 64 bit OS if your computer is decent anyway, it would really help alot of your issues (also get Windows 7/8 if you can)
