Working with a laggy computer

Hello, minecraft universe!
I'm going to get to the point here... My computer SUCKS!
The lag is so bad, it's amazing.
I can't afford a new computer right now, so does anyone have tips on how to work with a laggy computer? Like, strategies or something?
If you could give me some tips on how to work around the lag, or just learn how to play despite the lag, I would really appreciate it.
And don't say, "just deal with it", because I've already tried that. I've lost most of my points and been killed quickly most of the time since the lag started.
And don't tell me that it's my connection to the server, because my lag is just as bad when playing singleplayer.

Optifine may just be your savior. Otherwise try to allocate more memmory to minecraft (http://muttsworldmine.com/forums/topic/136-allocate-more-memory-to-minecraft/)

or just overclock the hell out of you computer ;-) (don't do it)

Turn down settings, get optifine, close down additional programs, allocate more memory, and most of all - avoid map 2.

Installed Optifine and allocated more memory, it definately helped. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I have a macbook (2008) and it is VERY laggy. I use optifine to reduce my lag. It does help a lot. and even on Tiny render you can still see very far. Optifine does not require modloader. Just search "Minecraft Optfine" in the google search (or whatever you use) and it should be very easy to install. Hope this helps!

No offence or anything to u and your leggy comps but pls don't complain about then in minecraft chat in game it's really annoying and no one cares. I don't wanna sound like a Inappropriate body part on a male or anything but I HATE it when people are all like my computer sucks go easy on me in chat it's so annoying
