Time to talk about gaming equipment

I agree that no piece of equipment is going to make a bad player good but I definitely see the need for a good mouse and keyboard although there is no need to splash out on a brand like razor. A gaming mouse allows you to use macros which is not just useful for gaming but allows you to run complex commands quickly whatever you are doing. A mouse with higher dpi gives you much greater precision which is important for gaming (although nits not a big deal for MCSG) as it helps increase you accuracy and sensitivity. A high DPI is also important for creative applications such as photoshop and after-effects.

I use a mechanical keyboard for a few reasons, 1 it can help take the strain out of typing for elongated periods of time as the key are more responsive. 2 They also help to prevent miss pressing keys. 3 They feel a lot nicer to type with, now I have gone mechanical there is no way I am going back to normal keyboards.

Now I am not saying that you need either but is very much preferable (my mouse and keyboard provide the quality equal to a razor mouse and they cost about £100 rather than £150 - £200) so I wouldn't purchase them for MCSG but I definitely would for most other games and other purposes.

I don't want it because it will make me better; I want it because it looks cool.

You can afford a computer, internet access, and a minecraft account.
You'd be surprised.
Some people, like I, didn't buy any of this stuff. The computer I use is the one in my family office, my parents pay for internet for my house, and I got the Minecraft account as a birthday present from a friend. My parents buy a fair amount of electronic stuff, but they wouldn't buy me fancy versions of stuff I already have. I'd have to do it myself. I could afford it, but other people with a similar situation may not be able to.

Actually, I got Minecraft back when it was free, I'm using my brothers laptop, and our wifi is on and off.
You'd be surprised.

Mkay. Time for my novel.

I agree with your point that you shouldn't buy new gear just because it's new. The gear you have won't effect your level of skill. However, I have recently been upgrading my equipment for the purpose of comfort.

Lately, I've been playing with a small logitech mouse and a PS3 headset. Those served me just fine, and I had no objections. It's only until playing with that gear began being difficult. Essentially, it was difficult to play for more than about 2 games without having to take a break because either my hand hurt, or my temple hurt. My temple would hurt because my old mic only had one speaker. The other end was just a little pad that did nothing but dig into the side of my head.

I decided to buy a newer mouse and headset. Nothing extremely branded, but something to improve the quality of my gaming experience slightly. I bought a new contoured mouse that holds my hand better. I know that's a rather petty reason to buy it, but my family has a history of arthritis, and my hand gets very sore easily. (Also, the scroll wheel is much more responsive, but that's aside the point). Other than that, it's just like my old mouse.

Now the headset I just recently bought (2 days ago) has been working wonders for me. Like with my new mouse, it's not something that's extremely expensive or unnecessary. Basically, I just wanted something with stereo ability instead of one speaker, that that's what I got. No more, no less.

Overall, I feel like it was a very wise investment. I'm not splurging money on completely superfluous things. I think everything I got was extremely useful, not just because it was a brand, or it had 12309128302938 new functions.

I'm with Cubes on this one. Even though I do have a $10 keyboard and mouse, I am feeling I need to upgrade for comfort. I don't have the most room, and I do really prefer the feel of a mechanical keyboard. I also wouldn't consider it a waste, for me personally, but that is only because I am employed and can easily afford it. I do agree that these things do not help with skill though.

The only thing that i think a Probably "good" gamer needs is, a good mouse, fx Razer - Logitech, and good headset you dont need a gaming keyboard...
