Time to talk about gaming equipment

Hello everyone! I'm back with another novel

The main thing I want to talk about today is something I've been hearing a lot about lately: Razor
mouses, razor keyboards, and all sorts of other fancy crap you don't need.
"Arena! You're not my mom! Don't tell me what to buy!"
I'm not telling you what to buy, I'm telling you what not to buy! Now, let's get into it:

Lately, Razor gaming mouses and keyboards seem to be taking quite a hold on the computer-pieces-o'-plastic market. With the bright lights, fancy buttons, and all sorts of crap you don't need, they've taken a young gamer market by storm.

Now, as you can tell, I'm getting after Razor. While they're probably a fairly solid company, there's a lot of misconceptions and many people are buying their products when they honestly don't need them. First off:

-If you think you having these will increase how you play in MCSG, you're wrong. They won't. You can buy the most expensive mouse in the world, it won't matter.

When I was #1 on the leaderboards, you know what I had? I had a magic mouse for my mac and a apple keyboard. The magic mouse is probably one of the most awful mouses for minecraft simply because it doesn't have a scroll wheel, and you're constantly accidentally flipping through your inventory. The keyboard also had some of the function keys rendered useless. Now days I use a $10 dell keyboard and a $10 dell mouse for my new computer.

You know what this really reminds me of? Beats. It's all about brand name. Razor has built up a name for themselves as some extremely top-of-the-line computer gaming manufacturer company. Beats also built up their name for some top of the line headset company. Their market is all brand messaging: Beats can sell for $300 when their quality can be debated as the same or even lower than my $50 Sony headset. It's all brand messaging.

-Arena! You're not my fricken mom! These things will help, they have more functions! Don't tell me what not to buy!

I know I'm not your mom, very observant. After those long years of your life you finally discovered that the random, male, teenage stranger you met online is not your mom. Congrats. Ah, yes, the functions! The mouses do have the buttons, don't they? You don't need them. Like said earlier, when I had my mac mouse, the only real function I could do was left click. It was impossible to block hit (or at least next to impossible). That's 1 function, you're telling me you need 12? Come on, we have keyboards for that.

Also, I'm not telling you not to buy these. By all means, if you want to blow $70 on something that really only costs $5 than go right ahead. Just know that you could probably be putting those $65 to something more useful.

Let's think of it this way: you use a pencil you picked up on the ground to do your homework. Then in stores you see a signature craftsmen Dixon Ticonderoga red velvet pencil for $50. Both write in similar to exact same style, but one's fancier than the other.

All in all, while the razor keyboards and mouses might look nice, truth be told it's all brand marketing. They try and pretend you'll have the ultimate game experience, when in reality it is not that much of a difference, and nothing to spend $70 for. It's just not worth it. If you're truly a good player at the game, you don't need the most expensive equipment in the world.

I'm glad to see someone's actually vocalizing against the whole brand name advertising situation. It's almost become commonplace to see so many people willing to throw ludicrous amounts of money at a name. It's difficult to see, especially when the product's quality doesn't even remotely justify the price.

But I agree with your post completely; too many people purchase overpriced pieces of plastic with tons of additions that, quite frankly, they don't end up making use of. I've always been an advocate of steering away from these types of purchases and instead investing in PC component upgrades that can actually improve the quality of your games. I doubt this sort of thinking will catch on though; people seem to be hopping on a bandwagon and thinking that buying a $150 mouse is going to increase their skill at a particular game.

In my personal experience, steer away from purchasing an expensive mouse, keyboard or headset. You only really need an expensive microphone if you're dedicated to recording YouTube videos or plan on doing podcasts. Instead, invest in slowly upgrading your computer's CPU, RAM and graphics card. You'll soon find that you have an upgraded PC that you'll enjoy playing on and was actually worth the money, instead of a flimsy piece of plastic that you'll be replacing in 6 months.

Yep. It's not really necessary, although they do look cool.

I guess how well a mouse serves you is really dependent on how used you are to it. Yes, gaming equipment isn't actually necessary, but it's all personal preference. Some gaming mouses have thumb buttons, which aren't actually that needed in Minecraft, but for those of us that actually play other games, they're pretty useful.

TL;DR

Either way, I don't get why people want those mouses anyway. I use a standard Microsoft mouse, and it's perfect for anything PC gaming. The only difference is that one mouse has cool lights, the other doesn't.

People are paying so much money just for a brand. If you want a mouse with extra buttons, there's so many office mouses out there that have 2-3 extra buttons (I have one) and they cost like $12 at Office Depot.

I have a fancy Razer Deathadder 2013, and Call Of Duty G105 Keyboard -- Which together cost around 200$, and funnily enough, I was ranked 8th in the world back when I used a crappy laptop keyboard and 10$ mouse. So yes, I agree with you Arena. Yet! While the mouse was highly overpriced, and what I was really paying for was the right to say "I have a RAZOR mouse", my FnS and fishing rod tactics improved? Why? The macros.

Macros have greatly improved my ability to quickly place fire, and switch to my fishing rod. Beforehand, I would've said my best weapon was my bow, nowadays due to the macros it's FnS. While I do agree I wasted my money on these fancy brand-names, I wouldn't say that they are on the same level with 10$ mice.
