Once, I found a guy without armor or weapons. I was about to kill him when he used his fishing pole. I had full leather armor, and I got killed. Just how powerful is the fishing rod?

You right click, hurt the person + pull him towards you and than left click. A fishing pole isn't stronger than a fist but you can just get double hits with it.

the fishing pole deals a half damage to people without armour, if you even have a leather cap it reduce the damage to zero

Thats not true armour just reduces the change of losing an half hearth

I also suggest when you get the first hit rush when you dont back up and regenerate health and try again

My friend told me to drag the opponent towards me by using the fishing pole and then shoot him with my bow. It is a great way of hitting with bow and arrow! You guys should try it.
