You can't get block drops, but I'm pretty sure you can still get sticks and wood from boats. I guess we'll wait and see.

Sticks are still really useful for crafting, and you can also use them for cooking things. So it's still a problem. What's wrong with just swimming?

What's wrong with swimming? *SPOILER ALERT* That's what they did in the quarter quell. Except, of course, you can swim much faster in real life than in the game and everyone swims at the same speed in the game. But other then that what's wrong with swimming?

Nothing is wrong with cooking, it would just be too easy to get good food if you can just destroy your boat and memorize the location of a furnace.
