What is? Anime? If so please just don't even get started. Anime is basically just Japanese cartoons, it has good stuff and it has awful stuff, same as here.

What have you seen that's anime?

Have you seen Ghost in the Shell, Steins;Gate, FMA Brotherhood, Any Ghibli Movie, The Tatami Galaxy, Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Clannad, Grave of Fireflies, Mushishi, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Boys on the Slope, Gintama, Code Geass, Wolf Children, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fate/ Zero, Madoka Magica, Usagi Drop, or Physcho-Pass?

If the answer is no, then you cannot judge. You simply haven't seen good anime.

If you're talking about the Moe (large eyes, etc) art style, not all shows use it. Anime has it's cliches and sides of it that not everyone may like, but then again so does North American media and really media from any country. Judging a show based on aesthetics is really wrong, especially considering some of the best animation I've seen is from anime.

Eh, I mainly just listed a lot of ones that are pretty commonly appreciated by almost everyone as being good. I liked it (7.5/8) though I didn't love it as much as the majority. Actually I talked on reddit about it and apparently there's tons of foreshadowing, themes, and symbolism in it. I'm not very good at picking up on these, so I plan to rewatch it with that in mind.

Literally the only magical girl anime I've enjoyed was Kill la Kill xD. However it doesn't really seem like one
