But the thing is we've had threads about the Malaysia flights going down and some other things involved in politics on the forums before...unless I'm honestly really stupid and Malaysia flights had nothing to do with politics

While there may have been underlying political motives, there was nothing directly political, unless you're in favor of the theory that they were shot down by an enemy nation for some sort of political purpose.
I feel that the threads themselves were more intended to bring attention towards the tragedy, and to garner (well-deserved) sympathy for the families who have suffered losses.
As for other political/religious threads, I can't remember off the top of my head, but they still did violate the rule, although it's a very rarely enforced one. Nevertheless, I did remember it, and there's no reason to ignore the rule now that I've remembered it.
