I would definitely go and listen to some speeches and participate in this event. A topic I would probably write about is how teams destroy the MCSG experience. I would write arguments for and against this statement, so I would basically be writing a discussion.

It's a good idea, but giving a speech in front of a physical crowd is different from essentially talking to your computer :p

A good way to make a persuasive argument in a speech is to take the top cons and explain them away. It may seem like undermining your own argument, but only if you can't successfully dissuade your audience from believing the cons as stronger than your argument. Good job, mate! Looking forward to hearing you out! :)

Wow, very formal! I'd like to listen.
Excuse my double post ((phone)):

It wouldn't necessarily have to be all that formal. Like the Colonel stated, it theoretically could be a story from your own childhood. This is still a public entertainment event and your audience would still be a bunch of gamers. The premise is to still have fun in the process of listening to thought-provoking arguments (or tales I suppose). I doubt MCG is going to expect the younger members to come up with full-fledged Lincoln-Douglas style arguments, checked for validity and soundness. There is definitely leeway for people. You aren't being judged at all (at least by me). ^_^

This is true. While speaking to an online crowd isn't quite as immersive as speaking to a physical crowd, many of the aspects remain the same, which would allow people to practice them. For example, it would help people with the actual speaking process. Furthermore, I think for a lot of people, internet people are still seen as a conscientious objective party whom will react to the speaker, and as such that fear of consequence yet satisfaction from feedback is still very real to us.

I'm noting that a higher number of people have said they'd be willing to give a speech than previously anticipated. Perhaps we should do a semi-formal test night, where people don't need a speech: they can just come up and speak about anything to get a feel for it. I'll probably read a Cracked.com article or badassoftheweek.com article for kicks. I've always wanted to do that.

As long as it's made clear that people aren't supposed to be judged for any personal views expressed in their argumentative speeches, it'll be fine. Sure, the mods in the channel can stop any protest or bullying, but they can't stop, or might judge the person themselves, based on what they've said.

Let's just say, this event's not really something you'd be too keen to do if you had a pending mod/VIP app. Ze internet ees too judgemental sometimes. Ees noot a reeesk many would take.

I like you, your really good at speaking my mind because I'm too afraid to admit it. I've got a pending mod app and I'm afraid of what I say because people think "ugh" Thank you sir :)

It's likely we will have an itinerary, much like we have for Open Mic Night, which will force those who will give a speech to give a brief synopsis of their speech. That way we can eliminate any inappropriate speech topics beforehand. The idea of this event is as I stated above. Just a chilled out place for people to talk about something interesting. For it to work and not have any flame, it will require a certain level of initiative on speech topics from everyone performing.
