Incentive for Reporting Hackers

Should there be an incentive for report hackers?

Just putting this out there;

Shouldn't getting killed by a hacker, motivate you to report that hacker?

In all honesty, when I was a regular member without notability and I was killed by a hacker I would record them and report them. It was sort of my 'revenge' towards that user and I would be seen as the bigger man. In my opinion, you shouldn't need motivation to record a hacker you should record them for the good of your playing experience and for the good of the rest of the community; It's a ten minute job at the most. You feel angry when you get killed by a hacker and that anger you hold should be enough for you to report them. I also second the points already made by Mooclan and RC_4777 and I know it's cliché but you should just report the hacker for the good of the community and that should be your incentive.
Not really, I don't want to waste my time looking at that hacker and trying to get him banned. That's my opinion after after all

It was a statement for people to debate and I respect your opinion as it is a good one too. But, would you 'waste your time' for a most likely pointless reward? Because if this suggestion was fulfilled, it wouldn't be a reward that benefited you in a enormous way. It's hard to think of a reward for someone who reports a successful hacker, can you think of any?

THIS WOULD SOLVE THE FALSE REPORT PROBLEM: Just take the ratio of real reports to total reports. If the ratio is greater 90% after a certain amount of reports, give them the reward. This would prevent players from reporting anything they see.

This would result in many more false accusations, just so they can get some sort or "reward"

This is the wrong place to post that, please create a new thread here:
http://www.minecraftsurvivalgames.com/forums/Report/

And use the template found here: http://www.minecraftsurvivalgames.com/threads/report-abuse-templates.6742/

Concerning the thread itself:
I do think that an incentive for reporting hackers would be nice. However, as was already brought up by RC, there would be many more "hackusations," bickering, and false reports, etc.
So, I believe that if this was implemented, then there should be a slight punishment for having a false report.
One example would be that if someone reported an obviously innocent player, then they would have, say, 100 points taken away. It's nothing that can't be earned back, but it does mean the difference between perhaps a piece of raw porkchop and an enderpearl.
However, if the video showed that the person was indeed suspicious, but the evidence simply was not enough to convict them, then there was no punishment.

And, of course, maybe 100-500 points for a successful report. It won't put you way ahead of the game like a stone sword right at the beginning of the game might, but it can make you feel better, and also you can be a nice guy and sponsor your friends more!

Or, as was mentioned above by Salamancer, a credit that goes towards a donor rank. Every successful report you make, you get 1 credit. At 50 or 100 credits, you can get Iron Donor for 1 month. At 300 credits, Gold. At 500 or 750 or 1000 credits, maybe even Diamond?!?! :O (A Gift Code or something, so you can gift it to a friend if you want.)
Additionally, if you make a false report, you get 1 or even 2 credits taken away, or perhaps a percentage such as 1% of your credits. This will make it much harder for people to spam reports, and will give a punishment (Or at least a risk) for doing so. And thus, it will also be tougher for people to achieve those donor ranks, which normally need to be paid for. This way, instead of paying money the person pays with their time and dedication to help :)

(Also if Mods were able to do this, it would be like a payment for doing their job, since staff members don't get paid to be staff.)
You sir are a genius.

I feel like I have to tell this story every time this idea comes up. I gave the full story in another thread suggesting this idea, so you can find it there.

We tried incentivising finding rule breakers before within the staff. We made a leaderboard for moderators with the most actions to encourage people to be more active. The result was a 2x increase in average mod activity, but a 5x increase in incorrect punishments. At the end of the day, this was causing more problems that it was solving, so we removed the system after only one month.

I can't imagine how people would act if we expanded that system to the entire playerbase, and created an incentive system that would give people ranks, which have cash value to them. It would be absolute chaos, and the amount of bureaucracy necessary in order to process both the increases in report abuses, tracking correct punishments, scoring each individual player, punishing players who falsely report, and ensuring up to date and correct statistics is well beyond the scope and scale of what we can do now.

So no, this system is unlikely to work based on our experiences. It's a good idea, but one that isn't realistic at this point in time.
