The exact same thread was made a few days ago, lel

Personally I think hotkeys are better for these reasons:
  • Near-instant access to first 4+ slots- allows for rod spam, fast fns and easier switching mid-fight in general
  • Small chance of messing up
  • Don't have to be aware of what slot you have selected
The one downside to using hotkeys is that you absolutely need to put your weapons in the right slot- for this reason I think it's important to be at least competent at scrolling in case you're in a situation where you aren't able to sort out your inventory. This also helps with accessing the other half of your hotbar.
I didn't know that there was an identical thread. I was just reading the inventory setup thread an this popped into my mind so I did it. I didn't want to copy anyone's ideas, and If I did, I'm sorry.

I kinda use both. I'm so used to hotkeys though since I used to play on a trackpad and I couldn't scroll that easily xD

There's no harm in making the thread- it's actually led to some good discussion. I just found it funny that the two were made so close together.

Some might call me a noob, but I'm much better with the scroll wheel. I learned to play Minecraft on an Apple Magic Mouse, which didn't even have a scroll wheel. You just rubbed your finger along the top and hoped it would take you to the correct slot. After playing on that for over a year I got a Razer Deathadder and it was heaven. I'm much better at scrolling than using hotkeys, and can accurately switch instantly.
+10 for Scroll Wheel

Inventory Setup:
1 - Sword/Weapon
2 - Bow
3 - Golden Apple
4 - Food
5 - Food
6 - Flint & Steel
7 - Flint & Steel
8 - Primary F&S
9 - Fishing Rod

Using this I can easily switch from sword to bow, sword to fishing rod, sword to fs, fishing rod to fs, and then bow to golden apple. And then fs to fs, etc. Everyone has their own idea of a perfect setup, and I change mine up about once a month, but I enjoy trying out different inventory setups.

Scrolling, even though the two don't make a difference in a fight except hot keys you can spam your rod more (that's not a good thing in my opinion). Scrolling (if it makes any difference) can you have full ability of wasd in a fight. This can lead to strafe's that an opponent is not used to.
I have a Naga I can WSAD while hotkeying ;)

I find hotkeying much easier than scrolling. However, I have my rod on the 9th slot so that means I have to scroll to the 9th. I use hotkey from 1-7 though. I usually hold my rod while running so that makes it easy for me to just scroll once to reach my fns which I have on the 8th slot or hotkey to the second one that I have in the 2nd slot.
