I think that the thing that makes a youtuber unique, is his character. One great example is Huahwi. He was a chill guy, who basically didn't focus on commentary at all, but why did people subscribe? Because of his randomness, and people found him funny. Two more examples are PrivateFearless and Toxicwasteii, both random and funny.

These channels have 50K+ subscribers, but if you look at smaller channels, with around 1K subscribers, these channels try to focus way more on topics and commentary, but, no offense, arent that popular as the other ones mentioned above.

If you look at this, is the commentary really essential for growing to a big youtuber?

Conclusion: Be yourself.

CLICKBAIT TITLES

No, but seriously, if you look at most major Minecraft YouTubers, one aspect will be fairly consistent; none of them embarked their channels by producing Minecraft content. They all usually began playing "flavor of the month" games like Club Penguin, Call of Duty and other console games to rack up a substantial enough audience, and they all switched to Minecraft later on.

To be honest, the key of getting off your feet initiall is to be....well....fake. Nobody is going to subscribe to someone with 100 subscribers because their "personality". They REALLY need to have content that makes them stand out. How one goes about doing this varies, from being extremely talented at the game to hopping on the bandwagon and playing what's mainstream. It's unfortunate, but it's the only way you'll get places if you plan on just releasing Minecraft Survival Games.

On mcsg you have to be good. If you're bad with amazing commentary your success will be less than those who are in the top 25 of the leaderboards legitimately.

The most key factor is being as unique as possible!
Many people who start youtube just do the same thing as others and not many people watch these "new" people because there are other bigger youtubers who do the same thing and have really quality videos.
Always have a good microphone and HD videos. Be sure to upload atleast 1 - 2 videos each week.
MOST IMPORTANT TIP IS TO NEVER GIVE UP!
These tips will definitely make a successful Minecraft Youtube channel.
