Ooohhhh, fancy. I personally prefer the more recent thread's idea however, as it solves the problem of random disconnects, Internet spikes, and other malfunctions. A combination would probably be the bets though, as no one in the more recent thread really got into the points of actual points (hehe) and item drops.

I'd prefer that a player's stats remain entirely unaffected unless they stay in a match until it actually begins (IE the countdown finishes and players can move). Leaving before then shouldn't affect anything, including the number of matches they've played.

Zeno pretty much sums it up here: what if you have to go? You would still lose points even if you had to leave the server for like an external reason. Or if you don't like the map and left you would lose points, etc.
