Run away, get them a little bit closer and turn back&single pull back your bow&get a double/triple/quad hit with your sword. Use FnS if necessary.

Hitting someone back with a fishing rod or using arrows, then hitting with your swords allows for some great combos. I find in 1.8, a good way to get combos is to not jump-crit as much and look up slightly.
