Nope.... well this sucks
I don't know what else to do for you. Maybe your mac doesn't support the new minecraft.
Please tell me what mac model do you have, If you don't know you can check it by doing this simple steps:
1. Click on the apples logo on the top bar:

2. Click about this Mac, something like this should pop-up:

3. Click on more Info...

It says version 10.5.8
This mac is a 2008 model so it's pretty old.

Hm, yes indeed, The mac is pretty old. Probably the new version of Minecraft isn't compatible with OS 10.5.8.

Edit: I've investigated and there's a bug for Mac 10.5.8 users: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCL-728, Guess you'll have to wait until it's fixed or something. :(
Well thanks for your help :( I guess I'll just have to wait. But would you recommend buying a cheapish gaming pc anyways, my mac is only good on short render distance so I want something a bit more decent.

Hm there's one more thing you could do. Install java. and then save the app to your computer and try opening it.
java: http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_mac.xml
as pc goes, I can't recommend you a pc, I don't own one. sorry.

I tried the java tester website, and it says Java version 1.5.0_30 from apple inc. And when I go to download the latest Java it just tells me some junk about latest osx versions and stuff, but no downloads happen...

There's your problem; Minecraft 1.6 and above no longer support Java 1.5 (you should've seen a notice on the main screen of 1.5.2 telling you that). You'll need to update your operating system to play on 1.6 or above, as Apple does not offer Java 1.6 for Leopard (10.5) and below, to my knowledge anyways.

No I looked for it after I saw that there would be a warning on main screen for Java. But I was never there. Is there a way to get the latest version of java or even the next one up?

Try the download here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1359

If that doesn't work, 1.5.2 is unfortunately probably the end of the road for you, since you need a 64-bit Mac to run Java 6.
