Minecraft Launcher 1.3.1 assistance?

Hello!

I apologize in creating what may be considered as a pointless thread, although I've looked around the forums and I can't find the answer. :/

Basically, I've downloaded the latest launcher from Mojang to have access to the 1.7.2 update (as I haven't played in a longgg time now). However, after accessing this version and closing the window it doesn't appear on my desktop when opening up the shortcut, instead reverting back to the 15.2 version. The only way I can get back to the 1.7.2 is by going to my latest downloads and having the launcher be downloaded again every time, which is annoying. What am I doing wrong?

I will admit I'm not a computer whiz - so its probably easy to fix - so any help at all will be greatly appreciated as I really want to get back to playing the servers again. Thanks.

1.5.2 and 1.7.2 have different icons. Create a quick access on your desktop with the new Minecraft launcher as both launchers are different.

Well I made a shortcut; is it alright however that every time I open this one to access the 1.7.2 launcher that it comes up with a white screen listing some commands? As before on my 1.5.2 shortcut it just pops up the mojang update page. Sorry if I seem confusing. xD

And if I want to push my luck: where can I get the latest version of optifine please? As I have 1.5.2 for that. Can't recall either what are the instructions to installing it correctly. Thanks again.

Sadly, optifine for 1.7.2 is not released as of now because of MinecraftMP (or whatever it is; either way, it's a modding client) not being updated to the newest version of Minecraft. However, MCSG has made it possible to join servers using 1.6 clients, where you can play with optifine.

Oh okay, that's a shame then. But is 1.6 then the latest version of optifine? As I got 1.5.2 and I'm not sure where to get 1.6.

Also, I'm still having the issue of when opening the minecraft launcher for 1.7 that it comes up with a white screen with a list of updates (?) rather then go straight to the mojang update page. Is there a way to change that? Do I have to add anything into winrar perhaps?

Oh, this is the price you pay when you mainly play consoles: no idea how to work/install stuff on computers. lol

Ok Great!! Since I know your not great with computer stuff I'll try to help.

Ok. If you can find your Downloads folder, in there should be 2 versions of Minecraft. Find the new launcher, and drag it onto your desktop.

As for the white screen, this new launcher has a console in its self so, at the top of the launcher there should be tabs, click "Update Notes" and it should take you to the page with all the update notes. Now, seeing as you havent used this launcher I'll ru you through a couple things that are handy with this launcher.
1. Once you have logged in, click edit profile in the bottom lefthand corner. A small popup window should appear. This is the most essential part of the launcher.
2. This is the section where you can downgrade your client to any version of Minecraft. click the section called "use version". A scroll screen should come up. I suggest you run and play Minecraft 1.7.2 after that, downgrade by clicking 1.6.4 in the . You will need these to run any mods.
3. After running the 2 versions, go to optifine.net and download optifine "Optifine HD C6 Standard 1.6.4". drag it onto your desktop and run it. When it opens, a small screen should pop up and when it asks you if you would like to install, press yes. It will install it automatically. Now when you run minecraft, You have optifine 1.6.4!

Optifine isnt out for 1.7.2, spx is waiting for mcp.

Thank you for taking the time to write this out! Much appreciated and it helped! Its great the optifine is installed by itself now rather then having to mess around with moving files. lol And thanks to the others too for the info.

Edit: Oh, and is even Winrar or the old optifine needed now on my computer? :O
