There should be a feature that does something when only so many people are left.
Example:
10 people left - increased mob spawn rate at night
8 people left - forest fire
5 people left - 1 ghast spawns at every player
3 people left - 5 creepers spawn at each player

This would be a lot more challenging :D

That sounds like a great idea although it could get predictable after a while so instead there shouldBe a list of things to draw from. For example 8 people left could cause A) Forest fire B)Sunami or C)Earthquake. This would make it random and unpredictable

Agreed! And maybe also randomise the amount of players needed for this script to be activated.
Example: When a player dies there is a 10% chance for an event to trigger. If the event is triggered the script chooses between a whole list of possible things to happen to the players or the map and chooses one.

i think at the 3 people thing it gets a little excessive, maybe like 30 angry wolves randomly spawn through out the map at 5 players

Don't worry Robaire, the thread is only 4 months old.

What is said is a bit unrealistic though.

An alternative?
12 people left = Aggressive wolves spawned throughout the map.
6 people left = Rare silverfish spawned throughout the map.

Only a few though, too much stuff (like spawning a ghast on each person) would be unrealistic and distract from the actual point of the game.

5 Creepers sounds a bit excessive particularly if there's a team... Maybe just spawning these things around the map (more concentrated at Corn ;-D) and maybe even cause some good events? Also there should be completely random events that occur without player count e.g. lightning, monster spawn at random places, maybe even a tnt drop? Although the idea in general is a good idea.

How would a tsunami or earthquake be simulated in vanilla Minecraft?

I kind of like that whole gets harder with less players. But it can not be like with ghasts spawning in and killing everyone. I think that AFK players or campers that stay in one place for like more then 3 minutes gets kicked.
