Gold is worth more, gold is a lot rarer and expensive in both minecraft and real life. Iron is more useful yet not more valued as there are larger quantities available. Not to mention gold is sexy and shiny.

To be honest iron donor does look ALOT better than gold, simply just because gold donors look like they are more orange than gold in my opinion
