My idea

I have been playing the survival games for a couple days now and I find an easy way to get food is to kill mobs (cows chickens pigs etc). I think there should be a chance to have coal be in chests so you can cook the meats. I don't know if coal is already implemented but i haven't seen any in the map so far and I think this would be a good way to get better food. The coal could be rare like a the rareness of finding an iron ingot in a chest. I understand if this is not added or you think this is a bad idea but I am just telling my ideas to make the servers better.

Punch leaves, get saplings, throw in furnace. Problem solved! You're right though, cooking food is a way smarter than just eating it raw.

You can also use sticks as a source of fuel. If I am not mistaken, you can also use and type of wooden tool as well.

Maybe 2 saplings can cook somethings, but I know for sure that it took my friend and I 4 saplings to cook one raw porkchop
