I can understand losing 50 points to, say, an 89'er - but losing 50 to someone a hundred points higher than you?

I think the death message is bugged and displays your own score instead of the score of the guy who killed you. Can't be too sure though.
Edit: Checked blaino50 on the leaderboards. He's probably never gone up to 590 points from the looks of it.

Those are your points (prior to the ones you lost from dying I think) not his.
It doesn't show their points properly when they kill you, only when you kill them.

Oh, and the reason it displays as 590 and then sends you down to the 400s is probably because of that point display glitch that kpwn was explaining.

We will look into that and thanks for letting us know. Reason why we are calling this beta is that we want to work out the bugs first before keeping everything solid.

it is actually a beug i found whats the number. it is your score or something because i died from a person who had 100 points lost 50 points and my new score was the one in the slot of the over guy but when u spectate him after his score goes back down.
