What Are Some Tips/Strategies For The Art of Using the Fishing Rod?

I found this strategy out on one game.

What you do, is that if you're chasing someone, you push them away from you if they're close to land. Keep hitting them until they touch the blocks on the land, and keep hitting them with the fishing rod until you get close enough. They should stagger and not be able to get on the land, but I'm not 100% sure this is true. I've tried it before though, and it's helpful.

Pretty sure that this will just boost them onto land.
