Server hosted in the US on the other side of the world in another game: 110ms.
Sever hosted just near where I live near Singapore: 340ms.

I do agree that Minecraft's netcode needs an upgrade.
It all depends what part of Australia you're at if you live in the east (Sydney) you get better connection on US but if you live in the west (Perth) your better of on AU servers this is why y'all aussies want the AU servers to be hosted in Australia instead of Singapore.

This is from my own experience from talking to people so if it isn't correct don't shout at me pls.

Well, I can't take the lag anymore. I'm quitting MCSG until it's fixed; hope to see you all again sometime around the leaderboard reset.
Well I hope to see you soon... Or do you stay online on the forums?

Going to try a game to see if they're still lagging as hard as they were before....

What maps were you experiencing lag on? Breeze Island has been incredibly laggy for a few members. Yoshidude3000 wasn't able to hit anybody due to the insane amounts of lag. SG5 has been notorious for causing lag. It seemed to get laggy after the update, and that's when the lobby and other maps were changed (the netherbrick blocks randomly placed everywhere...?).
That's just my guess. Chad and subv3rsion are going to have to take a look into this one. :/

Personally, the issues stem from a few different places.

LAG
  • Ping in command prompt: 90ms. Ping in MC: 250-300ms.
  • Server response to/Client handling of pings is slow?
  • MC just has horrid netcode?
  • SSP/SMP merge caused a lot of issues.
  • Not all sources of lag can be fixed by the devs, such as problems with MC itself.
NCP

  • Forcefield detection seems to be the buggiest feature - also the newest?
  • Bukkit might also be making things worse - new version forces NCP updates?
  • NCP apparently has a config file that is as clean-reading as most *nix man pages.
The thing that I find the most likely to blame is MC itself. It is an unbelievably awful engine for this. It's hardly anything you could call optimized (lol Java*), even less so when you're talking about its netcode, and yet it's also the best engine available for this thanks to the ease of creating new maps, a large playerbase, and the fact that it is pretty much a world simulator - any FPS engine does that, really, but MC specifically was made to simulate a rather Earthlike reality, and so that lends itself well to Hunger Games style PvP.

*Java is easy to learn and runs on anything that'll run the Java VM, which means Windows/Mac/*nix. It is, however, much slower than languages that don't need their code interpreted on the fly by a VM, such as C++. Choosing to write MC in Java was/is a mixed bag.
