"The Combat Update" [1.9]

In 1.9, swords don't block; shields do - you can block and hit at the same time. I don't know what to think about this, it could be cool however it could be really awful at the same time. They've also added a left hand and players have an option to play with the left hand as the main hand (Which is good news for you lefties.)

I think they should just leave it as it is tbh :/ all they need to improve is the insane combos players can get, apart from that its fine as it is (my opinion)

Yeah I agree, I feel as if they're "ruining" minecraft with this update.

Like I said, Dinnerbone also tweeted that nothing that he tweets is 100% sure. They are just ideas that they wanna try out. The features that the first Snapshot have, will more likely be implemented in the full release of version 1.9.

Pretty much, I don't think they gave it that much thought. But you have two hands a left and a right. I assume left and right click? I'm not sure.
