1. DONT F*CK AROUND You won't stand a chance of winning if your wander around aimlessly. Always use your chest route, and if that doesn't work, try looking at someone else's during spectating
2. Kill everyone you haven't personally teamed with Teaming could mean sharing food, armor, and weapons if you're stupid. Unless you are skyping or teamspeaking with the person, don't team. If he wants to team, backstab him before he does the same to you
3. You're never the only one going for the corn at sunset 99% of the time, there will be others, and they will try to kill you. If your first to corn at sunset, check after searching one chest, then move on to another one. If you're underpowered (wooden sword, leather armor) grab what you need and run before you find trouble. This doesn't mean don't go to corn at sunset. Pretty much every victor does this, and its tough to win if you don't
4. Armor is your best friend, not the sword Wood sword + iron armor > Diamond sword + no armor. Never forget to go for criticals + sprint hits. Your fists can easily take someone out by hitting them off a high edge with a sprint hit
5. Don't get too excited about finding gold Gold swords are terrible, gold armor isn't amazing, so golds only decent use is for golden apples
6. Food is vital, Bowl= Win Always keep your food at a high, as that regin means you can take small amounts of fall damage and mob damage. Collect mushrooms even when you don't have a bowl, because if you find one, you don't need to bother searching for shrooms so you can have a meal
7. Use other players as a diversion If your being chased, your best bet is to find another player. Sooner or later, he'll catch up and kill you, so by finding another player you can lead your pursuer to go for them rather then go for you. The best place to go for this is probably the corn if you're being chased.
There's probably things I haven't covered, but there are plenty more threads with strategies on them. These are several I think are important.
