As Toast said, playing outside more really isn't correlated with your social life or activity. I actually have much stronger ties with people online than I have met in real life, and probably stronger than I ever will have with someone in real life. Rather, I think we should be correlating it with the fitness level of someone, as those are analogous to each other. I've also strengthened my friendly ties by playing video games with some friends on Skype. The internet is a fabulous medium for connecting people, but I do agree with the fact that some people abuse it.
However, there are a multitude of reasons to explain this. Some people don't just spend endless hours on their computers because they're bored or lazy. The internet really does have meaning for some people. Desiring relationships and social connections with other people, or maybe getting your mind off of something horrible going on in your life, are just some reasons why people spend so much time on the internet. We're not all perfect, and for some people, their presence online makes them feel loved and cared about, something that isn't always the case in the outside world for them. Some individuals do have issues, whether they have problems talking to people in real life or being ashamed of being part of the LGBT community. It just offers you so much more than you can get in real life, and most of us being teenagers, it's the phase of life where a lot of this stuff happens. Not everyone is a well-rounded student who has a great social life, good grades and has their whole life planned out for them. Some people just need guidance.
Personally, talking to someone on Skype gave me a very different outlook on myself and things that surrounded me, something I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere due to the distance separating us. Some people spend so much time on here because they feel more comfortable with themselves among other people who share common interests or are open and understanding.
I could balance my time on the internet and my time outside easily if I didn't desire going on the internet so much more than if I was going outside. And if I did go outside, I would further desire talking to the people I speak with on the internet.
