We all know how food greatly affects you in the game. The type of food you eat, actually, also affect your hunger. Some food will keep you being able to sprint without your hunger decreasing for a really long time, and some food, your hunger starts decreasing literally 5 seconds after eating the food. I'll keep it simple and direct to the point. Before that, I'd like to explain one word that I'll be using quite a few times: Saturation.
Saturation is, simply, "Extra Food Points" or "Invisible Food Points". Hunger starts to go down every time the "invisible food points" ran out. We'll get that into detail in a short while.

The best food is Golden Carrot. It restores 6 food points and has a saturation of 14.4, which means 14 invisible food points should run out before the actual food points start to decrease. I hope I'm making sense here.

Next in line is Steak and Cooked Porkchop. It restores 8 food points. If you're wondering why it's second when it has greater restored food points, that's because the saturation is only 12.8 (less than the saturation of Golden Carrot).

(Next we have Golden Apple which restores 4 food points and has a saturation of 9.6, but we'd prefer using it for regeneration.)

Next we have Baked Potato, Mushroom Stew, and Cooked Chicken. They all restore 6 food points and have a saturation of 7.2.

The last ones that are worth keeping in the inventory are Bread which restores 5 food points and has a saturation of 6, and Pumpkin Pie which restores 8 food points and has a saturation of 4.8.

Eating foods such as Cookies, Melons, Raw Fish, Raw Chicken, Raw Beef, Raw Pork, and Potatoes can be really bad. It gets your hunger decreasing in just a couple of seconds which is very dangerous when someone decides to chase you for years.

For short, it is advisable to only eat the following:
1. Golden Carrot
2. Steak
3. Cooked Porkchop
4. Baked Potato
5. Mushroom Stew
6. Cooked Chicken
7. Bread
8. Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin pie gives you a lot of hunger back, but has terrible saturation :p.
