Check the Strategies forum for some starter guides. There's bound to be some helpful information in there. Other than that...

1) Get a map viewer, download the maps that show up in the game and explore them on your own time. Learn where chests are, plan out a route, maybe practice it once or twice. You need a solid plan in order to win. Also, not all chests are equal - some are tier 2, which contain things like diamonds, non-leather armor, stone swords, metal ingots, cooked food, etc. You want a route that contains as many of them as possible while allowing you to get from one to the next before anyone else does.

2) Always try to get something from corn at the start. Rush in (sprint-jump the whole way for extra speed), open the chest nearest you, and grab what you can as quickly as possible in order of value - melee weapons > diamonds > iron ingots/non-leather armor > gold ingots > leather armor > everything else. That's just my personal order of importance, though, and the position of things in the chest changes that - getting slightly worse stuff is better than trying that exact order and getting nothing. If you get a sword and someone else grabs the diamond right before you get to it, immediately murder them and take the diamond back if you can - melee weapons > diamonds.

3) I suggest looking up armor/weapon values in the wiki so you can quickly decide who you can challenge and who you can't. Basically, each whole unit of armor (above your health bar) gives 8% damage reduction. Full iron armor grants 60% in total (7.5 units). Knowing how much each armor piece contributes to this AND what kind of damage each weapon deals will allow you to gauge your odds against an approaching opponent before they start smacking you around. Kinda important.

4) Practice with a bow. A fully-charged shot deals 5 hearts of damage (before armor reduces it), and can easily finish off a retreating enemy. You can also shoot someone off a ladder with it, causing them to fall to their death. You can hold off a charging enemy with a shot or two, making them think twice about charging you a third time and possibly giving you time to regenerate or eat food (like a golden apple).

Anyway, there's more in the strategies section. Go read up. :D

Getting a kill is easy, especially early on in a match - get a weapon, then watch for other players who are nearby and heading into a room with no armor on (IE a soft target). Rush in behind them, and if you can catch them with their face in a chest, you can usually get one or two hits in before they react. They'll also be stuck in a room with you, so they can't easily escape.
