Wikipedia has a spiffy little diagram on the right to show you Europe's time zones. The UK is only on GMT for half the year, the other half it is on GMT+1. Many people actually use UTC now; for one reason, to make things clearer. Many people in the UK understand the time to be GMT all year round, which is, of course, wrong.
In defense of poor Valethar, however, he meant that we generally use GMT, GMT+1, GMT+2 etc. to describe the time. He didn't mean that most of Europe is encompassed by the GMT time zone itself.
