How big should avatars be?

Simple question, How big should avatars be? I'm currently making them at 640 x 480 pixels. Is that the right size?

I make mine 2000x2000 to have a big canvas

For a forum avatar, and most cases the length and width should be the same. Personal preferences; 240*240, 480*480, 640*640, 960*960, 1080*1080 and so on.

I make mine 600 x 600. It's a good size to stretch and edit avatars.

I like 450*500 or somewhere within that range
