Depends on what class it is for. You could write something completely fictional (The Hobbit/Harry Potter type fictional) or you could drive an argument on a topic, which there is thousands out there.

What subject are you writing this paper for? Is it just a general English assignment, or perhaps a global studies essay in a history class?

Anyways, one of the best things would probably to research a hot topic right now, perhaps illegal immigration (To the US, Europe, etc.), rise of the Islamic State, even corruption (Panama papers, etc.). There will be a ton of information out there, plenty of statistics to back up your argument, and you should be easily able to write a strong research paper. Furthermore, by researching a hot topic you will form your own opinion (but try to be unbiased in your writing), which is just as important as writing the paper.
