There is nothing wrong with being shy.

I am saying it's unfortunate that my personality changed through events that I could not control.

I can understand that. However your shyness will go away once you talk to someone a couple of times. Then you will feel quite comfortable talking freely with them and the conversation will flow freely. The hardest bit is just the first couple of times talking to them. However the rewards after this is well worth it.
