Make sure you stick to your theme. There's so many maps that could be good but then have an amusement park in an ocean map (just an example, none that I know of have this)

Be original, one of the main problems with maps todays is that there is a lot of repetition. You want your map to stick out and be awesome. :)

I think originality is a key factor, with the amount of maps getting added into MCSG, your ideas really have to stick out in order to be liked by the community. :)

Don't ever, EVER use world painter!!!
Don't create your map on a regular world. Always make it on a superflat world.
Don't use generic minecraft terrain.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with WorldPainter at all my friend, you just have to be skilled with it ;)

I strongly believe a map should never contain more than two biomes, and having even just two rarely works. If you do, they need to fit together well, if they don't, just stick with one. I'm sick of seeing certain PMC ones that will have deserts, jungles, oceans, etc all in one map... it just gives it the feel of a vanilla minecraft world... just keep it simple and non-vanilla! :p

EDIT: Also, never have any ncp villages or any other such things in your map, even if you modify them. I can't remember which map but I can think of seeing a broken-up ncp village on it. If you're going to put something like that in, build it fresh!
