Also, the Mayans didn't believe it was the end of time, it was the end of their calender, which has:
20 Days = 1 Uinal
18 Uinal = 1 Tun
20 Tun = 1 Katun
20 Katun = 1 Baktun
The Mayan Long count is 13 Baktuns, a very long time. Their long count calender ends on 21st December 2012, then they believed it would start again. So no, no one will die. Unless they kill themselves either in fear of the apocalypse or from what they do thinking that it won't matter because of the ending world.

The numbers are a bit off I believe, but this is correct.

Yeah, it's just the end of that specific calender. It's not like the World ends every time it gets to the 31st of December on your calender, do you? No, you replace it with the next calender... plus would you really want to be that guy that has to etch all those thousands of dates onto a slab of rock? :L

I think at the end of the cycle (13 Baktuns) the Mayans believed the world would be reborn, not just the calendar restarting, but there was no apocalypse necessary for that rebirth.

Yeah, that could be plausible too.

The world WILL NOT END until the sun has done its thing and has grown SO big, it burns up Earth (1000000 years from now).

Here is a scientific version of sab's saying
When the sun used up all of its helium and hydrogen, it can't use fusion. If it can't fuse the atoms, it will stop producing the gamma rays that it sends to the earth. When it runs out, it will expand and expand and blow up and we all die.

Yes, the world will end in approximately 4.57 billion years. Due to the sun, but what people have said above involving it aren't excactly correct.

The sun does not have enough mass to turn into a supernova, but it will expand into the red giant phase which would most definately reach the Earth's position right of now. Although, due to that fact that the sun then is losing a ton of mass the Earth's orbit may weaken so we'll be pushed out, saved, but it will burn out the majourity of the atsomophere and boil all the water on Earth.

In about 4.57 billion years we'd probably run out of sustanable resources anyway.
