Mainly, I think it's because there is next to no chance for the opponent to see the weapon - having one weapon out and pulling it out last second is one thing, but when during the entire fight it looks like a different weapon than it really is, it can be frustrating - an example is dying in 2 hits to what looked like a wooden axe, but was actually a diamond sword - it doesn't give the person a chance to run away, since they think they are being hit by an axe. By the time they realize just how much damage they are taking, it's too late. Trust me, looking at your health too often can be distracting, so people like me kinda judge when a good time to check is by the weapon the opponent uses compared to the armor you wear. It makes a big difference to people like me.
Just to be clear as well - an autoswitcher will switch to the best weapon you have just long enough to deal damage to a mob/player - in other words, it almost completely hides the weapon from the opponent, so they don't know what they are up against.
