You should never make a gold sword unless you have no other weapon. A wooden sword does the same damage as a gold sword and lasts longer. If you have a surplus of gold and already have some form of weapon, make some gold armor instead.

If you craft a gold sword, you're not only building a completely useless piece of crap, you're also making a smart investment for your wallet!
