Are Referees Famous?

I'm actually not an umpire, and nor do I play baseball, but if I ever do I'd definitely try out my plan on somebody.

No, since I watch hockey and the broadcasters usually talk about the players. When I think about referees there are about two names that I know of, neither of which I would recognize.

The thing is, you're talking about hockey here. I was specifically talking soccer/football which I should of stated. Football is so more publicised and one mistake they make is in every national newspaper perhaps I should of rephrased it to infamous referees...

Football is more publicized in your country, yes. Football is a more technical game though, that is just the nature of it. Even if I were to answer your question, my answer is still no. When I watch football I don't have a clue who the ref is and I don't care either. I watch the players not the refs.

Howard Webb, Graham Poll, Martin Atkinson, Mark Clattenburg, Mike Dean, Phil Dowd and that scary italian guy. That's off the top of my head, so I would say they are quite famous.
