Me and two friends are working on a MCSG map which has mainly been built using Minecraft update 1.8. We feel pretty safe doing so, since whe have seen 1.8 blocks like the slime block in some of the accepted maps. But now, when 1.9 is out, we feel the urge to play around a bit with the recently added blocks, but we don't know how it will appear to players using 1.7 and 1.8 versions on the MCSG servers. Does any MCSG developer etc. have an answer to this? We've seen shields, which got implemented in the 1.9 update, on the MCSG servers recently.

You should try to avoid using 1.8 blocks, as they have the potential to cause issues with 1.7 clients. Most, but not all, 1.8 blocks are substituted for similar-looking 1.7 blocks on 1.7 clients. 1.9 blocks/items cannot yet be used, and likely will not be able to be used without us going full 1.9.

The shield you see when blocking isn't actually a real shield. The server just shows shields in the hands of other players when they're blocking, and gives you a shield when you block, since 1.9 players would be at a distinct gameplay disadvantage otherwise.
