Lots of good ideas being suggested. out of all of them, I think I prefer:

1: The fireball idea. Nice throwback to the first book, unique from the other sections
2: The hunger idea. Having a section that drains your hunger would be really clever, and a great way to possibly weaken a team.

where would the fireballs come from? would dispensers with charges have to spawn first? they shoot only in a straight line...

I just thought of the most epic one ever, once minecraft updates you can make blocks appear only if your near then, so at one point there can be like a spooky segment

When you enter the disaster area your whole inventory is cleared, you're given slowness, and that creepy disc is playing

Fire is an AoE effect, fireballs are not. The only thing similar about them is that they both contain fire, but the methods of delivery are very unique. I still also believe that hunger would be unique from poison. Sure, poison drains your health, so does most of the sections, but nothing takes out your hunger or your food supply. It would force just about anybody to rethink their strategy.

My three ideas are simple and fun
1. Water turns into lava
2. Food doesnt work for that period of time
3. People can only walk for that period of time
