So yeah, I'm getting a new laptop, and while I know my way around computers etc, I would still like opinions on a few things. I've already chosen the laptop, it's a Lenovo e540 for interest (link, the one I am looking at is the 3rd option, it offers the cpu upgrade also but doesn't lock me into a bigger HDD) and I am 100% getting the graphics upgrade to the GT740m. (also upgrading the screen to 1920x1080)

What I want to know, is if it's really worth it in the long run to upgrade from the i5-4200M to the i7-4202MQ. It is an extra $200 or so dollars, and I want to know if there would be any particular advantage, and if so what kind there would be (significant FPS increase, faster in general, longer life, decreased battery, etc)

It's just I have heard differing opinions on this, some people thing that the i7 has no particular increase over the i5 in laptops, and some people say in computers in general. Then others say that there is a large difference. So yeah, that was with the 3rd gen processors, and I have no idea if that applies to Haswells etc, I haven't stayed too up to date. From my reading it would be better, but if anyone has an idea how much it would be good xP

Another thing I'm wondering about is 8gb of RAM- 1DIMM or 2DIMM? Am I ever going to want more than 8gb of RAM? I use 2 at the moment. xP

Keep in mind that I am a poor student, and would rather not pay for something that I don't need, even if it makes a 1337 rig with hardcore hax, I don't care.

So don't just vote the i7 because it's betterrr, only vote the i7 if you think that it is worth it. xD

Thanks ^-^

I have a i7 4th generation but I really don't see it as a FPS improvement for better FPS I would suggest a good graphics card, I have a nVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M (2.0GB) w/ Optimus and I get around 80-200 FPS with or without texture packs really doesn't make much difference even though I use R3DCraft 256x. And I also only have 8 GB DDR3 RAM, ram doesn't really matter on games such as Minecraft but have at least 4 GB if you want to dedicate it java.

Computer Specs:

Display:

15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Matte

Video Card:

nVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M (2.0GB) w/ Optimus

Processor:

4th Generation Intel® Mobile Core i7 4700MQ

Memory:

8GB DDR3 1600MHz

Hard Drive:

750GB 7200RPM

The i7 is worth it in the long run, but the i5 4th generation processor will do fine for you.
Based on the craptop you have now, the i5 will be amazing for you, and based on the stats on their website, you'll be fine generally with 4GB RAM/500GB hard drive/etc.
Eventually you can replace the RAM and/or hard drive with 2 x 4GB DDR3 sticks (or, 2 DIMMS), and/or a 256GB SSD. (That's just my nerdness though..)

tl;dr/non-tired-speek-even-tho-im-tired: That i5 processor, 4GB RAM in 1 DIMM, 500GB drive, etc. will be fine. If you need to upgrade later, it'll be cheaper at the start to actually get the base config of the laptop you want with exactly what you'll need to start off with.

Decided to go with the i7, because of a sale it works out to be only $100 or so more, so I figure it's worth it if it's one more year that it lasts in the future, and faster in the meantime :p

I'm also going with 8GB of RAM, I would go with 4 but for some reason 8GB works out to cost $20 less than 4GB. xD Logic.

So thanks for your help guys, I'm buying it tonight ^-^

Reading all of this made me want to pay attention in school. I literally went through that entire thing not understanding one word.

Yeah, any purchase between $1000-$1400 is 10% off, over that is 15% off. Getting the 8GB of RAM pushed it to just over $1400, meaning I got the 15% discount instead so it ended up costing less xP

My school didn't teach me anything about computers :p I've learned my stuff from word of mouth and the internet. That being said, you should still pay attention at school, some of it is interesting xD

I'll probably be too busy playing with it :3
