Story of my life...
Try being a front page players.. or top 5 like me.. Every game its like this. Gotta run for the first 5 minutes a lot of times just looking for a sword on the ground someone left because tehy didn't need it.

A key concept of flint&steel you didn't cover is chokepoints.

A). Never lay flint and steel while on long grass or half slabs (common knowledge).

B). When possible, don't lay fire in open ground as it's more likely they'll dodge around it. Instead find, say, a place between two trees, two buildings, even in a doorway/entrance, and then quickly light a three block long strip across the doorway aflame and move to one side (if possible).

Chokepoints allow you to handle multiple enemies at once without allowing the enemy to flank you. A real life example of this is the 300 Spartans who held off an entire invading army in one mountain pass.

This tactic is also good if you're on, say, Avaricia (as an example) and you run into corn and block the way in that they chased you through. This'll give you a few seconds to either regroup and take them on or run away while they either beat out the fire or find another way 'round.

Also, when I said go off to the side of the door way, that's just in case they beat out one of the fires and come through so you can flank them more easily and get that crucial first couple hits.
