fishing rods in 1.7

They will be able to hit eachother.
Why people tought you aren't able to is because they used a vanilla Minecraft server .jar .
There you are not able to hit people with it. But hitting with a rod is a Bukkit feature. And bukkit is usually used as it is able to run plugins.
So it's not true what they said. You can test it yourself.

With a Vanilla server you are not able to rod people, but with Bukkit you can.
