What do you do when new Pokemon games come out?

So basically what do you do when a new Gen of Pokemon games come out? Do you forget about the other games like Diamond and pearl or platinim, or leafgreen firered ect. and transfer them to for example pokemon x/y and never use the previous gen games again?
