I've worked with these people before. The reason they DDos is to get attention and to be called out. If you ignore it, They will giveup after an hour or so. They're just trying to get attention. Some will even go to the extremes of making an account on the fourms, Demanding something such as free donor or a list of accounts unbanned. Some do this and if they do not get what they want, Will keep the attacks on. Just Ignore it.

In addition to what you mentioned, some people have had bad experiences, either with staff or other players, and wanted to ruin it however they can.
There's various websites that you can purchase memberships on, and that membership will let you "Stress" servers, or DDoS it. Most of them are meant to be used to test servers to see if they're as strong as advertised, etc. but some people abuse them and use it to DDoS servers.
